IRB 101 is an overview of IRB requirements and procedures, and is open to anyone who wishes to learn how to receive human subjects approval for research at the University of Tennessee. If you are doing research, you should probably know what an IRB is, and why it matters to you, so consider attending. For more details about the sessions, visit the Office of Research and Engagement. Vols Online is hosting a Brown Bag series on online teaching and learning. There are two upcoming sessions and speakers will be sharing strategies, tips and recommendations for successful teaching and learning online.


Ernest L. Brothers, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, will present First-Gen Grad School 101 on November 10 from 5:00pm–6:00pm, as part of UT’s First-Gen Week. First-Gen Grad School 101 is designed to demystify the graduate application process, and provide insight on how to be competitive for graduate programs.


Teaching & Learning Innovation annually hosts its Innovative Teaching & Learning Conference. At this conference, TLI invites proposals that highlight practices (collaborative, active, peer-led, etc.), pedagogies (e.g., service learning, experiential learning, engaged scholarship, inclusive and culturally relevant, etc.), and/or methods of delivery (online, blended, face-to-face, etc.) in the higher education context.


The Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration is hosting Grad School Prep Month in October. Each week offers a variety of events, from drop-in hours to speakers and panels, designed to help students navigate the graduate school admissions process. The featured event is “Strategies to Gain Access to Highly Competitive Graduate Programs” on October 13th at 4:30 p.m. on Zoom.

The first session of the fall Community Engagement Seminar will be held on September 10 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This session is intended for faculty, staff and students who are new to community engagement and community-based participatory research. The facilitators will go over fundamentals and best practices for developing your engagement and outreach agenda. In response to recommendations from UT’s Re-Imagining Fall Task Force about supporting human subjects research, the Office of Research and Engagement has developed a series of panel discussions on transitioning from in-person to virtually conducted research. One-on-one coaching will also be available to researchers who require additional advice on conducting human subjects research online.
