Graduate Hooding Ceremony

For many, a major highlight of the completion of a graduate or professional program is the recognition of the hard work that goes into the achievement of a Master’s, Specialist in Education, or Doctoral Degree. The Graduate School, along with the entire UT community, looks forward to helping you celebrate your success with your friends and family.

The Graduate Hooding Ceremony is designed to ensure a safe and enjoyable ceremony for all. It may look a little different than past years, but one thing that remains the same is that the Graduate School is proud of all the graduate and professional students who have demonstrated the resilience, diligence, and persistence to succeed.

The Spring 2022 Graduate Hooding Ceremony will take place on May 20, 2022 at 8:30 a.m. Be sure to RSVP for the ceremony, so we can plan properly.

Guide for Participants

Here are some important details you need to know to help make this celebration of your achievement as enjoyable as possible.

Gates to Thompson-Boling will open 90 minutes before the ceremony for both guests and graduates. Graduates should enter at the lower level media entrance near the G10 parking garage for check-in. Balloons will mark the entrance. Guests must enter at the concourse level.

  • Wear your regalia to the arena, but leave it unzipped. This will expedite the security lines. Metal detectors will be in use.
  • If you are a doctoral graduate, you will arrive carrying your hood. If you area a master’s or specialist in education graduate, you will arrive wearing your hood.
  • Tassels are worn on the left side.
  • Please do not bring any items into the arena with you that will not fit into your pockets. Once you cross the stage, you may not return to your exact seat on the floor.
  • You do not need a ticket for entry.

Once participants have entered, they will be directed to the check-in tables, where name cards will be placed alphabetically by last name. Participants will get one copy of the name card to be presented before crossing the stage.

Master’s and specialist in education candidates will be directed to the main hallway inside Thompson-Boling Arena to line-up by college for the processional.

Doctoral candidates will proceed to the Ray Mears Room to meet with their hooder and to begin the line-up for the processional.

Graduate Processional

All graduates will participate in a processional. Lineup will begin at 8:00 a.m.

Graduates will be split into two lines. The lines will process at the same time up the center aisle.

Master’s and specialist in education candidates will turn left to be seated on the left side of the arena floor.

Doctoral students will turn right to be seated on the right side of the arena floor.

You may advise your guests to sit on the corresponding side of the arena.

We estimate that the ceremony will last about 2.5 hours. The ceremony will begin with speeches, followed by graduates crossing the stage, and finally degree conferrals.

Ushers will release graduates row by row, beginning with the master’s level graduates in the College of Architecture and Design. Graduates will exit in the direction indicated by the usher, hand their card to the announcer, and prepare to cross the stage when it is their turn.

Doctoral candidates should keep their hood on their arm until reaching the top of the ramp before handing it to the hooder. The hooder will then stand behind the candidate to place the hood over their head.

After being recognized, the candidate will pause at the top of the ramp for a photo and then descend the ramp for photos with Big Orange Photography. After photos have been taken, candidates and hooders should return to their seat using the center aisle.

The Alma Mater will be played at the end of the ceremony once all names have been read.

Once the ceremony has ended, the stage party will recess. Graduates and guests will then exit at the concourse level. No guests are permitted on the arena floor. We encourage you to plan a meeting spot with your guests.

In order to participate in the ceremony, you must be dressed in the proper academic regalia. It is your responsibility to order your regalia through the VolShop at the Student Union. If you have any questions, please contact the Graduate Counter at the VolShop at the Student Union (865-974-3459).

You must pick up your regalia from the bookstore prior to arriving at the ceremony. It will not be available for pickup at the event.
