National Postdoc Appreciation Week, September 21–25, gave the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, community a chance to recognize the researchers, mentors and emerging leaders who contribute to discovery and innovation across campus and beyond.
Throughout the week, postdocs came together for professional development, connection, research communication and, of course, a little fun. The Graduate School hosted events and activities designed to celebrate postdocs while providing opportunities to build skills, expand professional networks and connect with colleagues across disciplines.
A week of connection, recognition and professional growth
The week kicked off Monday with Paint the Rock and donut deliveries to postdocs across campus. On Tuesday, postdocs could participate in a Bingo Scavenger Hunt, enjoy a Dirty Soda Bar, and grab another donut delivery.
Wednesday featured ORNL Lightning Talks, giving postdocs an opportunity to share their research in a fast-paced format, along with the NPAW Lunch—a chance to gather, connect and celebrate with colleagues.
Professional development took center stage on Thursday with opportunities to polish CVs and resumes, ORCID profiles, and LinkedIn profiles. The week wrapped up Friday with professional headshots, an Ice Cream Social, and the conclusion of the Bingo Scavenger Hunt.
Supporting postdocs beyond NPAW
While NPAW provided a special opportunity to celebrate UT’s postdocs, support for postdoctoral scholars continues throughout the year.
The Graduate School oversees postdoctoral affairs at UT and works to provide resources, professional development and opportunities that help postdocs thrive as researchers and prepare for the next stage of their careers. Jessi Smith, associate dean for scholar development and wellbeing, leads the Graduate School’s postdoctoral initiatives and works with postdocs, faculty mentors, and departments across campus. Smith brings extensive experience to UT postdoctoral affairs, including mentoring postdocs and leading faculty affairs.
Faculty and staff who work with postdocs can look forward to additional opportunities and resources in the coming year, including initiatives focused on professional development, recognition, and community-building.
Thank you, postdocs
Postdocs play an essential role in UT’s research enterprise—advancing research, mentoring students, contributing to the classroom and helping build partnerships across disciplines and institutions.
Thank you to all of our postdocs for the expertise, curiosity and energy you bring to UT. And thank you to the faculty, staff and campus partners who support their work and professional growth.
National Postdoc Appreciation Week may be over, but our appreciation and our commitment to supporting postdocs continues all year long.
