How Earth’s Hidden Resources are Shaping Safer Energy Solutions

Ozgur Yildirim, postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences

Every day, discoveries beneath our feet are helping shape how we power our lives and protect our communities. At UT, postdoctoral researcher Ozgur Yildirim is working towards safer subsurface energy systems daily.

Originally from Turkey, Yildirim joined the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences in spring 2026. His research focuses on subsurface energy systems, including fault evolution and coupled deformation–fluid flow processes while helping protect the community from natural disasters such as earthquakes.

Yildirim’s role is defined by two primary areas of responsibility. In his workspace, he designs and conducts experiments to better understand fluid-flow processes, insights that are crucial for energy resource development, and environmental sustainability. Alongside these efforts, he also leads three-dimensional numerical simulations that explore how long-term reservoir operations might impact the risk of natural disasters, such as earthquakes. This research is especially meaningful to Yildirim as it not only deepens his understanding of resource potential beneath the earth’s surface but also contributes to developing safer practices for accessing and managing subsurface energy systems.

For those considering postdoctoral opportunities, Yildirim emphasized the importance of searching for these valuable positions early.

For researchers interested in pursuing postdoctoral positions, I would recommend beginning their search about six months before completing their degree. I would also suggest being flexible when applying. It’s important to research not only the department and university, but also the city where you would live, to make sure it’s a place where you’ll be happy conducting your research.

Yildirim continued to discuss his appreciation for the opportunities that the university provides to the community of postdoctoral researchers to connect with each other.

In my department, I have always had good communication with my colleagues including faculty, graduate students, and administrative staff. We have a group of postdoctoral researchers both within my department and across the university, so I always feel connected to other researchers.

Yildirim’s story is just one example of how postdoctoral researchers are driving progress at UT: advancing knowledge, tackling real-world challenges, and helping shape what comes next in their fields.
