Interested in a master’s degree in comparative and experimental medicine?

The Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences (BDS) at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) serves as a regional and national resource for veterinary laboratory diagnostics, biomedical research, public health, and the human-animal bond. They are currently seeking a highly motivated student to pursue a master’s degree in comparative and experimental medicine under the mentorship of Prof. Hiroyuki Mochizuki. The Mochizuki Lab focuses on the molecular pathology of cancer and molecular diagnostics in veterinary species.

This position offers a two-year graduate research assistantship (GRA) beginning summer or fall 2026. The GRA position is a 50% Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) and includes:

  • stipend of $35,325 per year
  • full tuition and fee waiver

  • research mentorship in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment

Required Qualifications

  • bachelor’s degree in biology-related fields such as genetics, genomics, or animal science
  • strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • prior experience in a research laboratory within an academic institution such as research internship and/or undergraduate research experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • peer-reviewed research publications
  • knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including:
    • DNA/RNA extraction
    • PCR (conventional, real-time, and/or digital)
    • sequencing (Sanger and/or Next-Generation Sequencing)
  • knowledge of histology/pathology techniques, such as:
    • tissue sectioning
    • microscopic examination
    • immunohistochemistry
  • professional degree in veterinary medicine (DVM or equivalent)
  • veterinary clinical experience
