GRA Position Open in the Sultana Lab

One graduate research assistant (GRA) position in studying interactions of Ixodes scapularis ticks with tick-borne viruses is available immediately in the laboratory directed by Hameeda Sultana, PhD, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Sultana has a well-equipped, state-of-the-art laboratory that uses multidisciplinary approaches such as virology, vector biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, genomics, and cell biology to understand the interactions of human pathogens with vectors (tick and mosquitoes) and mammalian hosts.

Highly motivated and interested candidates with a MS/DVM/MD/other professional degree and/or with relevant research experience in virology, vector-borne diseases, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry or microbiology are especially encouraged to apply for this advertised position. Candidates with strong background in murine models, gene regulation, protein purification, protein-protein interactions and cell culture work are also highly encouraged to apply. In addition, BS graduates with a high GPA and strong motivation in research and higher education are also encouraged to apply.

Specific Duties

The specific duties for this position include:

  • working with ticks, mice and BSL-2/BSL-3 pathogens (PI will support all required trainings);
  • analysis, organization, maintenance, and interpretation of data;
  • supporting the writing of draft manuscripts;
  • supervising technicians, casual employees or undergraduates on this project;
  • providing support in laboratory general tasks;
  • maintenance of research reagents and stocks related to the project;
  • being a good team player;
  • following good work ethics and practices;
  • meeting the timely deadlines for research progress;
  • informing well in advance (via email) for any absences or changes to the position.
