Human Subjects Regulations Workshops in Fall 2022

The Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development (ORIED) is hosting four sessions in fall 2022 designed to help researchers understand the regulations around working with human subjects in specific research programs.

Human Research Protection Program Virtual Training—Exempt Category 1 Guidance

September 9, noon–1:00 p.m.

Presenters: Jennifer Engle and Ashley Brown

The HRPP will host a one hour workshop on the federal regulations for Exempt Category 1, which applies to research conducted in schools and other educational settings. Research in this category typically occurs in established educational settings and involves normal educational practices. This will be followed by a Q&A session.

Human Research Protection Program Virtual Training—Social Media Research

September 27, 2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.

Presenters: Jenny Dunn and Jennifer Engle

The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) will host a one hour workshop highlighting some of the requirements for conducting research on the internet such as recruitment, data collection, and storage. This followed by a Q&A Session.

Human Research Protection Program Virtual Training—Exempt Category 3 Guidance

October 4, 2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.

Presenters: Jennifer Dunn and Rob Withrow

The HRPP will host a one hour workshop on the federal regulations for Exempt Category 3, which applies to research on Benign Behavioral Interventions. A “behavioral intervention” involves the performance of a cognitive, intellectual, educational, or behavioral task; or the manipulation of the subject’s physical, sensory, social, or emotional environment. This will be followed by a Q&A session.

Human Research Protection Program Virtual Training—FERPA & Research with Students

November 4, 11:00 a.m.–noon

Presenters: Jennifer Engle and Ashley Brown

The HRPP will host a one hour workshop on Human Subjects Research with students and how Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) applies. FERPA applies to the protection of identifiable education records. This will be followed by a Q&A session.
