Wednesday, February 26, was a major day for the UT 3MT 2020 Semi-Final Competitions. There were two competitions, and three competitors were selected by the judges from each. As with Tuesday’s competition, each participant, following the rules of the Three Minute Thesis organization, was given three minutes (no more) and a single slide to talk about their research to a panel of judges, who may or may not even understand their field of study. The judges were looking for a presentation that was clear, compelling, and engaging. And all of the participants gave such presentations, making the task of the judges that much more unenviable.

Semi-Final 3, left to right: Nate Brady, Tyler Milfeld, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Toothman, Lindsay Jenkinson, Shande King, Erika Ivey, Allen Heaston

The participants selected to go forward came from the Herbert College of Agriculture; the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences; and the College of Law. The research topics presented in these sessions included research on improving human physical health, creating a more just society, bringing important insights into the food we eat, and finding new ways to educate the next generations.

Going forward are: Erika Ivey (College of Law), Jonathan Kubesch (Herbert College of Agriculture), Lindsay Jenkinson (Herbert College of Agriculture), Liz Peterson (College of Law), Shande King (College of Education, Health and Human Sciences), and Tanner Thorsen (College of Education, Health and Human Sciences). All six of these will take the stage at the Student Union Ballroom on April 1 at 1:30 during Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week.

As always, the Graduate School thanks all of the participants who took the time to engage with this competition. This takes a lot of work and a lot of courage to do, and all of us who are able to watch the presentations appreciate it immensely. Many thanks to all our judges, and our organizing colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Herbert College of Agriculture, the College of Law, the College of Social Work, and the Tickle College of Engineering. These competitions would not be possible without the support of these colleges.

The last semi-final will take place on Friday, February 28 in 602 Haslam Business Building, starting at 11:00. For more about the competition and to view final competitions from the past three years, visit tiny.utk.edu/threeminutes.
