Graduate Education Week Starts Soon

In recognition of the contributions that graduate education makes to the state of Tennessee, Governor Bill Lee issued a proclamation that February 9 through February 15, 2020 be designated as Graduate Education Week. Among the reasons for this proclamation, stated by Governor Lee, are:

  • the economic impact of the over 8,500 graduate degrees issued by Tennessee universities annually
  • the involvement of graduate education with local organizations and business to advance resources to the community and the public
  • the influence of graduate students on the attraction of new businesses and creative ideas to Tennessee
  • the internationally-recognized scholarship of graduate faculty from Tennessee
  • the leadership roles occupied by alumni from Tennessee graduate schools

Our graduate and professional students play a vital role in education at UT, and are critical in maintaining UT’s status as a research institution. Enrollment of graduate students at UT has maintained steady growth over the past four years, and we look forward to seeing that continue.

We have fantastic graduate students at UT and the Graduate School staff is pleased to be a partner with other campus institutions in advancing resources for them. From providing more high quality professional development opportunities to a commitment to financial support, UT believes in fostering this highly valued part of the UT community. Dean of the Graduate School Dixie Thompson will be in the Graduate Commons on February 12 from 1–2:30 to talk with graduate students about whatever they would like to talk about.

If you are considering being a part of the community of graduate Volunteers, or thinking about pursuing a graduate degree at all, please join the Graduate School and representatives from graduate programs across campus at Grad School 101 on February 12 at 10:30 to noon in Student Union 362B. You can hear from our staff about the graduate school process, including admissions, and ask any questions you may have. And there’s pizza available to participants, as long as it lasts!

Whatever you do next week, remember our graduate and professional students and think about all they do for our university!
